Department of the Army, General Orders No. 58 (November 27, 1957)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Galindo Vargas, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Battery C, 605th Anti-aircraft Artillery Missile Battalion (NIKE), on 9 June 1957, near San Antonio, Texas. An automobile in which he was riding was involved in a three-car accident, and a fire engulfed both of the other vehicles. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Vargas, accompanied by another serviceman at the scene of the accident, rushed between the two burning cars. Despite the intense heat and imminent danger of the gas tanks exploding, Private Vargas, while his companion held the car door open, pulled the passenger from the burning vehicle and moved him to a place of safety. His prompt and courageous action in the face of great danger was instrumental in saving a life, reflecting the utmost credit on himself and upholding honored traditions of the military service.
