The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Solomon R. McKenny, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, First Field Artillery Battalion (Rkt/How), 73rd Artillery, on 15 August 1957, at Fort, Polk, Louisiana. While acting as Instructor and Safety Noncommissioned Officer on the Live Hand Grenade Range, Sergeant McKenny, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, wrested an active live grenade from the hands of a trainee frozen with fright threw it over the protective wall where it exploded instantly without harm to any of the personnel. Sergeant McKenny’s quick judgment and courageous action by risking his life in this extremely dangerous situation reflect distinct credit on himself and the military service.
