Department of the Army, General Orders No. 58 (November 27, 1957)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Grover P. Conway, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving as Platoon Sergeant, Company A, 10th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Provisional), 3d Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia, on 13 May 1957. While supervising hand grenade throwing on Dianda Range, Sergeant Conway was faced with a sudden crisis which demanded immediate and spontaneous action to avert possible loss of life to several of his fellow soldiers and injury to others. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he wrested an active live grenade from the hands of a trainee frozen with fright and threw it into an open area where it exploded instantly without harm to any of the personnel. The prompt and courageous action, presence of mind, and quick thinking displayed by Sergeant Conway by risking his life in this extremely dangerous situation to prevent a serious tragedy, reflect the utmost credit on himself and the military service.
