The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer (WO-1) Jon M. Lyons (ASN: W-3156558), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Aircraft Commander of a UH-10 helicopter in combat operations near Duc Hoa, Republic of Vietnam. When the ground troops requested aerial support, his fire team immediately proceeded to the area and began rocket and mini gun attacks on enemy positions until all ordnance was expended. When the fire team returned to the contact area after a refueling and rearming mission, his ship came under intense automatic weapons fire from three enemy .50 caliber positions. With himself and everyone else on the ship wounded, and with the ship on fire, he attempted to land the aircraft but crashed into a rice paddy. He quickly departed the ship and began aiding the crew chief and gunner who were trapped in the rear compartment beneath live ammunition. After extracting the crew chief and gunner, he helped them to shelter and began to administer first aid. When a rescue helicopter arrived, he carried the critically wounded crew chief amidst the enemy fire to the awaiting ship. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
