Eber Simpson graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of June 1943. He was shot down twice, within weeks of each other in January 1945, and each time survived to make his way back to friendly lines. He was killed in an air accident on September 20, 1946.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Corps) Eber Eugene Simpson (ASN: 0-26357), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a P-47 Thunderbolt Fighter Airplane and as Operations Officer of the 391st Fighter Squadron, 366th Fighter Group, NINTH Air Force, in aerial operations against the enemy in Belgium, in January 1945. Captain Simpson distinguished himself by exceptional courage and skill in breaking up a panzer attack in the Ardennes Forest during the Battle of the Bulge. Captain Simpson conducted several passes at a target after his fighter had been hopelessly crippled, continuing to engage the enemy until he was shot down. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Simpson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
