The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Antonio Guiterrez, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company A, 4th Armored Cavalry Reconnaissance Battalion (Separate), in Austria on 11 March 1955. When a fire broke out in a building in Mattinghofen, Austria, where a group of British soldiers were sleeping, Sergeant Guiterrez donned his gas mask and entered the burning building which was intensely hot, smoke filled, and disintegrating, to assist in the evacuation of the unconscious soldiers. The courage, initiative, and heroic action displayed by Sergeant Gutierrez was instrumental in saving several lives, and reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
