The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant Dallas J. Callahan, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Battery C, 43d Field Artillery Battalion, at Fort Carson, Colorado, on 30 March 1955, while serving as assistant instructor in live hand grenade training. When one of the trainees made a faulty throw and the grenade bounced back into the pit, Sergeant Callahan dived into the pit and without regard for his own safety hurled the grenade from the pit, where it exploded immediately. Sergeant Callahan’s alertness, and prompt action undoubtedly prevented serious injury to personnel, reflecting great credit on himself and the military service.
