The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Airman First Class Gregory Alan Reifschneider, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, on 22 January 1972. On that date, while performing his duties as a computer operator at the Accounting and Finance Office, Airman Reifschneider was disturbed by the sound of a firearm being discharged into the office. His subsequent search revealed that an ignited “Molotov Cocktail” had been thrown through a broken window into the building. With complete disregard for his own safety, ignoring the potential threat from the armed arsonist, the danger from the burning gasoline, and the imminent explosion of the heated fire bomb, he unhesitatingly fought and subdued the fire and prevented the fire bomb from exploding. His bold and daring action precluded the financial difficulties for Air Force personnel that would have resulted from the destruction of their pay records, as well as the loss of a valuable administrative building. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Airman Reifschneider reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
