The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Fred Keith Mahaffey (ASN: 0-72962), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Colonel Mahaffey distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 6 April 1969 while serving as Commanding Officer, 2d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, during a reconnaissance mission in Long An Province. After spotting two enemy soldiers maneuvering against friendly ground forces, Colonel Mahaffey directed his pilot in several low level passes over the area. Disregarding his own safety, he exposed himself to enemy fire to effectively engage the enemy soldiers with his M-16, then landed to recover their weapons and documents. Lieutenant Colonel Mahaffey’s outstanding initiative and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
