The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Matthew Rosenberg, United States Army, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 11 September 2001, after terrorists crashed a hijacked airliner into the Pentagon. Without regard for his own safety, Sergeant Rosenberg went to the rescue of the injured and dying personnel, to render medical care and evacuate to safety. Accompanying an Air Force Surgeon General, they entered the area of the attack to search for personnel in need of medical assistance. The area was filled with heavy smoke and had caved in with victims trapped under debris. Sergeant Rosenberg helped free and evacuate two victims pinned under the rubble and debris to safety. He directed personnel through thick smoke safely out of the building and provided medical care to injured personnel as he continued his search down the hallways. He continued searching for victims until the smoke became unbearable. Once outside and catching his breath, he returned again into the building to locate other casualties. Sergeant Rosenberg’s heroic acts are a testament to his bravery and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
