The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major David R. Richardson, New York Army National Guard, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 11 September 2001, after terrorists crashed a hijacked airliner into The Pentagon. At the time of the initial blast, Major Richardson was standing near the main entrance to the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. He shouted “get down” several times. Just as the second explosion to place, Major Richardson, without hesitation or fear threw himself over Major Phillips just as flaming debris crashed through the window. Had the windows not been coated with Mylar, Major Richardson would have endured physical harm or death as a result of his courageous act. Major Richardson’s heroic act is a testament of his bravery and reflects great credit upon himself, the Army National Guard, and the United States Army.
