The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain John Lamm’e, United States Army Reserve, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 11 September 2001, after a hijacked airline flight, with over 30,000 pounds of jet fuel was used by international terrorists as a weapon to attack the Pentagon. Upon impact there was a thunderous explosion and a horrific fire that killed scores of military and civilian personnel, injured hundreds of others, and left most everyone in a state of shock. Captain Lamm’e immediately accounted for and evacuated and proceeded to the Pentagon Courtyard to assist in rescue efforts. Risking lethal smoke, fire, and dangling electrical wires he entered into the carnage and rescued a man with what appeared to be third-degree burns over most of his torso. He went on to rescue several other victims as more rescuers were succumbing to the heat and smoke. All other soldiers, including senior officers and one flag officer readily took instruction from Captain Lamm’e because of his ability to remain calm and think quickly. While directly assisting in the rescue he continued to direct separate rescue teams and ensured that some semblance of force protection was present. His unyielding devotion to her fellow soldiers and civilians undoubtedly saved lives and showed America’s resolve to overcome this action of international terrorism. Captain Lamm’e’s heroic acts are a testament to his bravery and reflect great credit upon himself, the United States Army Reserve, the United States Army.
