The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Lieutenant Colonel Kenny Ray Cox, United States Army, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 11 September 2001, on behalf of government personnel after a group of international terrorists hijacked a civilian airliner and in a suicide attack flew it into the Pentagon. Without regard for his own safety, Lieutenant Colonel Cox made his way to a point behind the impact area, and in conjunction with others caught six personnel who jumped from the burning building. In spite of the smoke and flames, when the remaining survivors in the rooms above could not jump he grabbed a ladder, climbed upon a large metal container and placing the ladder upon his neck and shoulders extended the ladder close enough to the windows that those individuals trapped inside were literally able to clamber to safety over his body. Lieutenant Colonel Cox’s brave actions reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
