The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain Darrell Oliver, United States Army, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 11 September 2001, after a hijacked airline flight, with over 30,000 pounds of jet fuel was used by international terrorists as a weapon to attack the Pentagon. The impact of the aircraft collapsed walls, hurled office furniture and equipment, and plunged the office into darkness and debris. Leaving both military and civilian personnel in a state of shock. Although dazed after being struck by flying debris and without regard for his own life, Captain Oliver rescued members of his office by physically carrying them over partially collapsed walls to safety. He risked his life multiple times by carrying incapacitated members of the office to safety despite heavy smoke, darkness, and the obstacles presented by debris from the attack. Captain Oliver returned to carry a handicapped employee to safety, stopping only when he was assured by the Senior Officer present in the office that all members were accounted for and safe. Once clear of the building, Captain Oliver, despite his injuries, volunteered as a member of a litter team to reenter the building to rescue additional people. His unyielding devotion to fellow soldiers and civilians saved lives and served as an inspiration to all assisting in this tragedy. Captain Oliver’s valor and professionalism in the face of extreme adversity is a testament to his person courage and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
