The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Major (Field Artillery) Victor Badami, United States Army, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 11 September 2001, while responding to the aftermath of the international terrorist attack on the Pentagon. Major Badami’s office was directly in the path of the destruction. Even though his office was on fire and filling with smoke, he remained back to ensure the office was empty. He was fully in control of his faculties throughout and exhibited great calmness in this highly stressful situation. Major Badami assisted a civilian who was organizing an effort to move several barrels of flame retardant from the hanger to the other side of the walkway, for use by firemen. The area was within the blast area and chemical flames were burning with intense heat nearby. He was among the first to begin carrying and continued to the end. Later that day, Major Badami volunteered for a stretcher detail to carry out injured from the building and remained in the area until the detail was dismissed. Throughout the event, he remained focused on assisting others with total disregard for his own safety. Major Badami’s heroic acts area testament to his bravery and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
