The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Sergeant James D. Calvert, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Putah Creek, Lake Solano, California, on 13 June 1987. On that date, Sergeant Calvert swam sixty feet against strong current through extremely cold water, to save an unidentified man from drowning. With complete disregard for his own safety, and despite the extremely dangerous current and numbing cold of the water he unhesitatingly swam the stream and persevered in his humanitarian rescue efforts. He successfully reached and pulled the victim to safety. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Calvert has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
