The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Sergeant William L. Savary, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Old Tucson, Arizona, on 14 September 1989. While performing temporary duty at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Sergeant Savary witnessed an automobile accident which left two victims trapped in a smoldering vehicle. Cognizant of the risk to his own life through fire and possible explosion, Sergeant Savary rushed to the scene and removed one victim from the area. Upon returning to the wreckage, he noticed the second victim was pinned in by the steering wheel. Sergeant Savary managed to flag down another passing motorist and with his help, he was able to free the injured person from the wreckage. After getting everyone clear, Sergeant Savary continued to treat the victims for shock until the fire department arrived. By his courageous actions and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Savary has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
