The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Technical Sergeant Gary J. Lebak, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Bayandir Reservoir, Ankara, Turkey, on 12 August 1990. Sergeant Lebak heard a group of Turkish Nationals on the far shore yelling excitedly, and saw another individual in twenty feet of water, brought him to the surface, towed him to shore, and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, saving the individual’s life. This act exemplified courage, humanitarian concern, and heroism, bringing great credit upon himself, the United States Air Force, and the United States of America.
