The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Robert Lee Little (ASN: RA-14480855), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. Platoon Sergeant Little distinguished himself by heroic actions on 16 August 1966, in the Republic of Vietnam. The 3d Platoon of Company A was on a search and destroy operation in the vicinity of Trang Bang, Republic of Vietnam on 16 August 1966. As the company was crossing an open rice paddy, it came under enemy fire from the far woodline. As the company maneuvered to close with the enemy, it was observed that the heaviest volume of fire was coming from a well-concealed bunker in the treeline. The bunker was directly in front of the 3d Platoon. Realizing that the bunker had to be neutralized so that the company could move out of the danger of the open rice paddies into the woodline, Sergeant Little asked for a volunteer to go with him to attack the bunker. Having directed the platoon to lay down a suppressive base of fire, he and his comrade started to their objective. Continually exposing himself to intense enemy fire, Sergeant Little closed to within twenty feet of the enemy bunker. Gathering all available strength, he left the last available cover, dashed through heavy fire from the bunker and threw a grenade into the opening, killing several occupants. The successful destruction of this bunker enabled the company to continue its mission without further incidents. Sergeant Little’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
