Headquarters, 83d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 188 (August 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Richard H. Worrell (ASN: 35448879), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 330th Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 August 1944, in France. In the vicinity of Carne, France, Technical Sergeant Worrell discovered that his company was being delayed by two enemy machine guns. With complete disregard for his own safety, he crawled forward over terrain covered by enemy small arms fire, and aided by a sound power phone, directed mortar fire which successfully eliminated the two enemy machine guns. During the course of this heroic act Technical Sergeant Worrell was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper. His outstanding gallantry, leadership and personal courage reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service of the United States.
