The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William J. McGuire (ASN: 0-1315709), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 330th Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 January 1945, near Cherain, Belgium. Although Lieutenant McGuire had suffered extreme exposure during the preceding day and night, he readily organized his company and mounted them on tanks to make a daylight attack on Cherain., Belgium. Realizing that the attack would result in almost certain death for those riding in the first tanks, he unhesitatingly mounted one of the leading tanks in order to inspire the members of his company, and mounted his remaining officers on the succeeding tank. The outstanding gallantry, personal courage, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant McGuire reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
