The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lee E. McCloskey (ASN: 33712569), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 330th Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 April, 1945, in Germany. When the flank patrol of which he was a member received intense enemy small arms and machine gun fire from the front and rear, Private McCloskey heroically advanced ahead of the patrol and contacted the enemy. With complete disregard for his personal safety Private McCloskey continued his advance, firing his BAR at the enemy and enabling his platoon to move into a more advantageous position ultimately resulting in the elimination of the enemy strongpoint and the gaining of the company objective. Private McCloskey was fatally wounded during his gallant act. The outstanding courage and conspicuous devotion to duty displayed by this enlisted man reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
