The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class William Crowley (ASN: 33448739), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 83d Infantry Division, on 7 July 1944, near ****, France. A squad truck and gun ran over and exploded an enemy mine. All of the personnel were thrown clear of the truck except the squad leader who was pinned under the wreckage and suffered a fractured leg. In a few seconds time the truck was a blazing inferno. Private First Class Crowley, disregarding the intense heat and his own safety, assisted in reaching the squad leader and extinguishing the fire on his clothes. His prompt and courageous action was a demonstration of heroism of a high order.
