The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Field Artillery) Vernon T. Judkins, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 19 March 1955. During the Exercise Surf Board Firing Demonstration on San Clemente Island, two Navy Skyraiders collided, forcing both pilots to bail out. One pilot landed in the impact area where the Heavy Mortar Company of the 38th Regimental Combat Team was firing at the time. With shells exploding in the area, Captain Judkins, without regard for his own personal safety, landed his helicopter to effect rescue. As Captain Judkins left the area with the rescued pilot, the Skyraider exploded. This exceptionally daring act performed voluntarily in an extreme emergency, prevented serious injury to the helpless pilot. By this act, Captain Judkins reflects great credit on himself, his organization and the military service.
