The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Robert Moorman Cheal (ASN: 0-18613), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 July 1944, in France. In an attack against stubborn enemy resistance and in the face of heavy enemy small arms, mortar, artillery, and tank fire, Lieutenant Colonel Cheal and approximately 117 offices and men were cut off behind the enemy lines. During his period his aggressive leadership, personal encouragement, and coolness under fire set an example to his men so that repeated enemy attacks failed to destroy it. The inspiring leadership and conspicuous devotion to duty of this officer reflect the highest credit upon himself and exemplify the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
