The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Tomczak, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 27 September 1944, at ****, Holland. Private Robert Tomczak, Rifleman, Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, with the aid of Private Higgins, demonstrated high personal courage when he risked his life to rescue two British Anti-Aircraft Gunners. He and Private Higgins were on an outpost position near the highway bridge over the Waal River. During an enemy bombardment a nearby British anti-aircraft position suffered a direct hit which killed several members of the crew and buried the gun. Privates Higgins and Tomczak left their covered position amid heavy shelling and went to the rescue. After they had extricated the two British soldiers, these two men continued to risk their lives while administering first aid treatment. As a result of their action the lives of two Allied soldiers were saved. Their great personal courage and exemplary conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
