The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jack O. Barton (ASN: US-54367280), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant Barton distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 16 May 1967, while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a reconnaissance mission near Duc Pho, Republic of Vietnam. When a massive cave and tunnel complex was discovered and intelligence reports indicated an enemy platoon had been operating in the area, an exploration team was organized and sent into the complex. On his first venture into the tunnel system, Sergeant Barton spotted an enemy soldier as he disappeared into the maze. After withdrawing for instructions and to insure that no friendly forces were already in the caves, he again entered the complex only to be forced out by a hostile hand grenade. Sergeant Barton and his team were successful in discovering large caches of equipment and capturing 18 Viet Cong soldiers. Leaving the caves after another hand grenade was thrown at him, Sergeant Barton was instrumental in killing eight Viet Cong who attempted to force an exit from the complex. The following morning, Sergeant Barton again entered the system to search for weapons and enemy soldiers, leaving only when fatigue and the lingering presence of riot gas forced him out. His display of personal bravery and devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
