The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Dale E. Garber (ASN: W-3156193), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Garber distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a pilot of an armed UH-1C helicopter during an insertion of allied troops near the city of Dalat, Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Garber’s aircraft was the target of intense enemy fire and was heavily damaged. He flew the entire length of the landing zone shielding the vulnerable troop ships from the enemy fire with his own aircraft. This gallant act enabled the troopships to clear the areas but resulted in heavy damage to his aircraft. With both of his hydraulic systems leaking badly, he guided his aircraft to a successful forced landing in a nearby clearing. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
