The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Henry Heyman (ASN: 32816798), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On the night of 12 – 13 October 1943, near Scafa di Caiazzo, Italy, under heavy enemy machine gun, mortar, and artillery fire which had caused many casualties, and with complete disregard for his personal safety, and utter contempt for danger, Private Heyman voluntarily left cover and went into the impact area of hostile fire to render first aid and evacuate four wounded men. Private Heyman was exposed to enemy fire landing in his immediate vicinity for three hours, shells hitting within 25 yards from him and spraying fragmentation much closer. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
