Lilly (ASN: 0-1175211), United States Army, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights during the period from 6 August to 9 August 1944. Lieutenant Lilly performed outstanding work as Liaison Pilot to the 345th Field Artillery Battalion during its advance from Mayenne to Le Mans, France. Remaining in the air almost continually during daylight hours, he directed accurate artillery fire on enemy opposing the advance, conducted reconnaissance to the front and flanks, and furnished liaison between adjacent columns. His daring and presence over them, was an inspiration to the front line troops, and his work was a direct contribution to the speed and success of the advance. The services rendered by First Lieutenant Lilly reflect the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
