The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Peter Franklin Weber (ASN: US-52752905), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Weber distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 4 April 1968, while serving as a Point Man with Company B, 3d Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission in Kien Hoa Province, Vietnam. During the initial engagement, the point element was pinned down by intense fire from an enemy machine gun emplacement. Completely disregarding his personal safety, Private Weber courageously crawled alongside the position and eliminated it with a well placed hand grenade, enabling his company to continue its advance. When his element again became pinned down by automatic weapons fire, Private Weber exposed himself to a heavy volume of hostile fire to crawl forward and locate its exact position. Realizing that he could not eliminate the position himself, Private Weber radioed information back to his company that allowed it to silence the emplacement and continue to advance. Private First Class Weber’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
