The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Melvin S. Miyashiro (ASN: RA-10122927), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 26 April 1967, while assigned to the Signal Detachment, 46th Special Forces Company (Airborne), 1st Special Forces. Specialist Miyashiro, while working with a staff sergeant on 220 volt power lines, observed his fellow soldier being severely shocked by electricity from a 220 volt power line. The soldier was standing on wet ground and his body was thereby creating a complete short circuit to the ground, greatly intensifying the electrical current. The soldier was unable to summon help or free himself and was about to pass out from shock when Specialist Miyashiro, also on wet ground and several feet away, ran at the soldier and by hitting him with a flying body block, freed him from the electrical lines. Specialist Miyashiro’s quick action and utter disregard for his personal safety, demonstrated unusual courage and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the military service.
