The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class John E. Donovan (ASN: RA-16674562), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on the night of 1 June 1967. Upon discovering a fire raging in the trailer adjacent to his home, Sergeant Donovan, despite the intensity of the flames and without regard for his own personal safety, entered the burning trailer and made his way to the living room and succeeded in saving the life of an injured nine year old boy who had been trapped in the trailer. Sergeant Donovan carried the boy out of the flame-engulfed trailer and delivered him to persons gathered nearby, Refusing medical attention for smoke inhalation and abrasions, he then reentered the trailer to rescue a second child still trapped inside. The flames and smoke, however, had become too intense and Sergeant Donovan was driven out. He then attempted to enter the trailer through a rear window, but the intense heat had melted the frame of the trailer and prevented re-entry. Within a few minutes the trailer was a blazing inferno. Sergeant Donovan’s courageous actions were in the highest traditions of valor and disregard for his personal safety in the face of danger. By his actions he has brought distinguished credit upon himself and the United States Army.
