The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Staff Sergeant Kelly Calhoun, United States Army, for exceptionally valorous actions on 27 February 2010 while serving as the Senior Weapons Sergeant for Operational Detachment Alpha 1233 (ODA-1233) with Special Operations Task Force – South in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in Zabul Province, Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Calhoun willingly and repeatedly exposed himself to overwhelming enemy fire in defense of critical terrain, preventing the enemy from gaining an advantage and engaging the Detachment and Afghanistan National Army Forces exposed in the valley below. His actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military heroism and reflect distinct credit upon himself, the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Afghanistan, the Combined Forces Special Operations Component Command – Afghanistan and the United States Army.
