The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Captain James W. McDaniel (AFSN: FV-3136683), United States Air Force, for heroism as Job Control Shift Officer with the 4258th Strategic Wing while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force at U-Tapao Airfield, Thailand, on 7 August 1968. On that date, at great risk of his life, Captain McDaniel assisted in moving numerous B-52 aircraft from the vicinity of the U-Tapao Airfield bomb storage where nine explosions of 750-pound conventional weapons occurred. His action not only saved numerous B-52s from damage and destruction, but insured their continued availability for combat missions. By his heroic actions and unselfish dedication to duty, Captain McDaniel has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
