The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Akira F. Shiotani (ASN: 0-1692461), United States Army, for heroic achievement in the vicinity of the Punch Bowl, Korea, on 5 May 1953. Lieutenant Shiotani was the leader of the support element of a reconnaissance patrol. Upon return to the main line of resistance, it was discovered that one member of the patrol was unaccounted for, presumed to be missing in action. Lieutenant Shiotani, with complete disregard for his personal safety, immediately reorganized his patrol and returned to the scene of action. As the patrol approached the area, withering enemy small arms fire rained upon the friendly forces. Lieutenant Shiotani, with calm determination, pressed steadily forward until the seriously wounded man was located. Lieutenant Shiotani then directed the evacuation to the battalion aid station where it was revealed that the quick and efficient evacuation of the wounded man was directly responsible in saving his life. While returning to the main line of resistance, Lieutenant Shiotani discovered the bodies of two dead enemy soldiers. With one of the enemy dead on his back, and with intense enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire showering the area, Lieutenant Shiotani heroically led his patrol back to the safety of the main line of resistance. As a result of Lieutenant Shiotani’s gallant action, one man’s life was saved and valuable information was obtained from the enemy dead. The personal bravery and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Shiotani reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
