The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant First Class Roger L. Roberts, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy. Sergeant First Class Roberts distinguished himself by heroic action on 1 February 1969 while serving as a member of the Engineer Operations Advisory Directorate, Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics, Headquarters, United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On that date, a helicopter crashed while departing Hoc Mon, Gia Dinh Province, Republic of Vietnam. Three of the eleven occupants of the helicopter were able to extricate themselves from the craft but the remaining eight were trapped inside. The loss of the rotor and transmission allowed the engine to operate at an unsafe level and it was in danger of exploding Disregarding the extreme danger, Sergeant Roberts reacted immediately and raced to the wreckage. He climbed into the craft and assisted in the remove of the eight occupants. His immediate and courageous actions resulted in preventing further injury to the survivors of the crash. Sergeant First Class Roberts’ heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself the United States Army.
