Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 100002 (August 10, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant John R. May (ASN: US-51774805), United States Army, for heroism, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant May distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 20 May 1968, while serving as a squad leader with Troop D, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry during a combat mission in the Mui Ong Tri Mountains, Republic of Vietnam. When he was part of an infantry element that was inserted into enemy controlled terrain, Sergeant May exposed himself to the hostile fire as he moved across an open area in order to assist several wounded comrades to safety. Disregarding his own safety, Sergeant May returned to the medical evacuation zone and personally assisted the injured onto the waiting helicopter. His display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
