The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Floyd E. Addy (ASN: 0-691932), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as pilot on a B-24 type aircraft of the 493d Bombardment Group (Heavy) during a tactical mission over Laon Airfield, France, on 14 June 1944. His aircraft suffered a direct hit by antiaircraft fire which disabled two engines. Realizing that the airplane was too badly damaged to return to England, Lieutenant Addy ordered his crewmen to abandon the aircraft. Upon attempting to make his own escape, Lieutenant Addy noticed that the crippled aircraft was heading for a Belgian village. With utter disregard for personal safety, Lieutenant Addy returned to the controls and attempted a crash landing outside the village, however the plane was too severely damaged and, in the ensuing crash, Lieutenant Addy lost his life. The courage, daring, and unstinting devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Addy are worthy of emulation by all and reflect great credit upon himself and the Army Air Forces.
