The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Frederick Nelson Deland, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 27 May 1863, while serving with Company B, 49th Massachusetts Infantry, in action at Port Hudson, Louisiana. Private Deland volunteered in response to a call and, under a heavy fire from the enemy, advanced and assisted in filling with fascines a ditch which presented a serious obstacle to the troops attempting to take the works of the enemy by assault.
