The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert Earling Hammerquist, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 3d Battalion, 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 29 March 1945. When Company H was temporarily forced to cease its advance due to heavy fire from the outskirts of Dolman, Second Lieutenant Hammerquist went forward under constant and accurate enemy fire and assaulted the anti-tank position which was slowing the advancing. Destroying the crew with a grenade, Second Lieutenant Hammerquist urged his company forward in seizing the key bridge to the town. His superior leadership, personal courage, and heroic conduct contributed greatly to the success of his company, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
