The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Robert Lawrence Herklotz, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an A-1 Tactical Fighter Pilot of the 1st Special Operations Squadron, Nakhon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action in Southeast Asia on 28 April 1972. On that date, Lieutenant Herklotz led a flight of A-1 Skyraiders which responded to a call for immediate assistance from friendly troops under attack by armor-equipped hostile forces near a besieged bridge position in the Republic of Vietnam. Despite extremely marginal weather conditions and particularly intense ground fire, Lieutenant Herklotz continued to attack the armored vehicles until all were destroyed or forced to withdraw with heavy damage. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Herklotz reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
