The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Robert Lawrence Herklotz, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force as an A-1 Tactical Fighter Pilot of the 1st Special Operations Squadron, Nakhon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action in Southeast Asia on 29 April 1972. On that date, Lieutenant Herklotz was Sandy Lead in an A-1 Tactical Fighter dedicated to a search and rescue mission for down Allied and American airmen near Quang Tri, South Vietnam. His numerous low-level, highly accurate attacks halted the advancing hostile force and drove them into retreat before they could capture the helpless airmen. Disregarding the extremely heavy antiaircraft fire, he repeatedly attacked hostile positions at point-blank range and enabled the vulnerable helicopter to rescue the downed airmen. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Herklotz has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
