The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Henry W. Vitous (ASN: 6888827), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Battery C, *** Anti-aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion, on 18 October 1944, at Marseille, France. When a fellow soldier was wounded by an exploding anti-personnel mine, Private Vitous, with complete disregard for his own safety, entered a heavily mined area and administered first aid to the wounded man. His heroic action played an important part in saving his wounded comrade’s life.
