The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Keith Lewis, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 4 August 2009, while saving the life of a passenger trapped inside a burning vehicle. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Lewis broke the driver’s window of the burning vehicle, cut the shoulder belt off the victim, and slowed the spread of flames using a fire extinguisher. Through his brave act of heroism, the passenger was able to be extracted and air evacuated to a medical facility. Sergeant Lewis’ outstanding performance and professionalism are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Tennessee National Guard, and the United States Army.
