The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer (CW-2) Michael B. Syverson, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Chief Warrant Officer Syverson distinguished himself on 15 May 1972, while serving as Pilot/Gunner of an AH-1G Cobra Helicopter engaged in rescue operations south of An Loc. As the flight of helicopters was screening an armor column moving from Chan Thanh to An Loc, they were informed that a fighter aircraft on another mission had been shot down near their location. Observing a parachute descending to the earth, Warrant Officer Syverson’s flight immediately went to try to rescue the downed airman. Arriving on the scene, they were met with heavy anti-aircraft fire. While a scout aircraft descended to attempt rescue, Warrant Officer Syverson circled the area, providing suppressive fire and drawing the enemy fire toward his own aircraft. Correctly assessing the situation, the enemy redirected its fire to the rescue ship. Only through Warrant Officer Syverson’s continued support and cover was the rescue aircraft able to withdraw from the area. Chief Warrant Officer Syverson’s outstanding flying ability, devotion to duty, and gallant actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
