The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain David C. Bentley, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller, near An Khe, Republic of Vietnam, on 15 April 1972. On that date, Captain Bentley flew in support of the Republic of Korea Capital Division, which was conducting a sweep to open highway 19 at the An Khe Pass. Due to hostile forces occupying strategic locations with fortified bunkers, the Korean forces were continually being pinned down in cross fires. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Captain Bentley immediately requested tactical fighters. Despite marginal weather and intense anti-aircraft fire directed at his unarmed aircraft, Captain Bentley made repeated rocket marking passes to expend several sets of fighters. Due to his timely actions, the hostile forces retreated and many friendly lives were saved. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Bentley reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
