The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain David C. Bentley, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Phu Cat, Republic of Vietnam, on 14 September 1972. On that date, Captain Bentley flew in support of allied forces attempting to capture a fortified hostile position. Despite low clouds, rain and heavy ground fire, Captain Bentley repeatedly flew at very low altitudes to mark the hostile positions, which were within 50 meters of the allied units. He then efficiently and accurately directed tactical airpower against the hostile locations, effectively neutralizing their forces. The dedication and determination of Captain Bentley contributed greatly in the return of strategic territory to allied forces. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Bentley reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
