    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain David C. Bentley, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Phu Cat, Republic of Vietnam, on 14 September 1972. On that date, Captain Bentley flew in support of allied forces attempting to capture a fortified hostile position. Despite low clouds, rain and heavy ground fire, Captain Bentley repeatedly flew at very low altitudes to mark the hostile positions, which were within 50 meters of the allied units. He then efficiently and accurately directed tactical airpower against the hostile locations, effectively neutralizing their forces. The dedication and determination of Captain Bentley contributed greatly in the return of strategic territory to allied forces. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Bentley reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain David C. Bentley, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller, near An Khe, Republic of Vietnam, on 15 April 1972. On that date, Captain Bentley flew in support of the Republic of Korea Capital Division, which was conducting a sweep to open highway 19 at the An Khe Pass. Due to hostile forces occupying strategic locations with fortified bunkers, the Korean forces were continually being pinned down in cross fires. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Captain Bentley immediately requested tactical fighters. Despite marginal weather and intense anti-aircraft fire directed at his unarmed aircraft, Captain Bentley made repeated rocket marking passes to expend several sets of fighters. Due to his timely actions, the hostile forces retreated and many friendly lives were saved. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Bentley reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain David C. Bentley, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Phu My, Republic of Vietnam on 4 June 1972. On that date, Captain Bentley directed several sets of tactical air support against hostile forces, who were attempting to overrun friendly forces at that district headquarters. Descending and remaining amidst hostile ground fire because of weather. Captain Bentley repeatedly sacrificed regard for his own safety to insure the safety of the strike aircraft. His exceptional precision and control combined with his exemplary courage contributed greatly to the saving of the district headquarters, the destruction of five enemy anti-aircraft weapons and the saving of innumerable friendly lives. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Bentley reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
