The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Joseph W. MacCord (AFSN: AO-802654), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as navigator-bombardier of a F-26 attack bomber on a night intruder mission on 10 May 1952. Lieutenant MacCord displayed outstanding airmanship and navigational ability while vectoring his bomber on armed reconnaissance over the enemy’s main supply routes between Sinanju and Tyongyang, Korea. Near Sukchon, two live locomotives and forty-five boxcars were sighted and immediately brought under attack. Lieutenant MacCord skillfully directed the pilot on a series of low-level bombing and strafing passes against this lucrative target. The aggressive attacks stopped one locomotive with undetermined damage and resulted in the destruction of three boxcars by fire. Out of ammunition another bomber was called in to finish the kill. This highly effective strike deprived the enemy the use of essential supplies and equipment. By his outstanding courage and devotion to duty, Lieutenant MacCord has brought great credit upon himself, his organization, and the United States Air Force.
