The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Shane L. Huneycutt, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 1 November 2009, while responding to an automobile accident. Staff Sergeant Huneycutt noticed a two car collision on the side of the highway which he was driving. After quickly assessing the situation, he realized that one of the cars was on fire and had two injured occupants inside. Without concern for his own safety, he and another Soldier from his unit made their way to the automobile and braved the flames and possible explosion to pull the injured people to safety. While the fire was raging out of control, Staff Sergeant Huneycutt set up a cordon so that emergency personnel could safely arrive. Without the brave and heroic actions of Staff Sergeant Huneycutt, the two occupants of the burning vehicle would have most likely perished. Staff Sergeant Huneycutt’s heroic actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and the United States Army.
